Where would you be without caffeine? For that matter, where would civilization itself be without it?
Fortunately, we have some insight into the latter from Michael Pollan's book Caffeine: How Caffeine Created the Modern World. In it, Pollan discusses how caffeine may have played a role in winning and losing wars, shaping politics, and completely restructuring economies.
He argues that the industrial revolution itself wouldn't have played out as dramatically as it did without caffeine. Given that this era is considered a turning point in modern civilization, we can only speculate just how much caffeine has changed human history.
Today we know it as the ubiquitous "coffee break" — that time employees get in the middle of the day to fuel up on caffeine. A century ago, this was a novel idea, and a brilliant one. Caffeine is so powerful that employers started giving workers time off to consume it, because it boosted their attention and productivity.

Since then, research has only confirmed the power of caffeine. In the context of training, caffeine can help improve muscular endurance, boost strength, and increase power output. On the mental side, it can increase focus, drive, and determination.
It may even help speed up your metabolism, although if caffeine supports weight loss, research suggests its for indirect reasons.
For these reasons, we include caffeine in everything from our award-winning pre-workout, Pre-Kaged, to our health-first fat loss drink, Clean Burn Powder.

Today we're not putting caffeine on trial. Instead, we're digging into an oft-overlooked point: not all caffeine is created equally.
Where Your Caffeine Comes From Matters
Most caffeine supplements are made with synthetic caffeine — caffeine anhydrous. This form is produced in a lab through a multi-step chemical synthesis. It works, and it's cheap, which is exactly why it's everywhere.
But it isn't the only option. Caffeine also occurs naturally in coffee, tea, and other plants. At Kaged, that's the version we chose.
Every caffeinated Kaged product uses PurCaf®, a patented caffeine extracted from real green coffee beans rather than assembled in a lab. Here are a few reasons we choose PurCaf® natural caffeine over synthetic alternatives.
1) PurCaf® Is Naturally Derived, Not Lab-Made
You train hard, do your cardio, and pay attention to what you eat. You probably prioritize fruits and vegetables because you know how much they matter.
It makes sense to take the same care with where your caffeine comes from. Synthetic caffeine anhydrous is built molecule-by-molecule in a lab. PurCaf®, on the other hand, is drawn straight from the coffee bean — the same plant humans have leaned on for centuries. Same active compound, but a source you can actually trace back to nature.
2) It Starts With Real Green Coffee Beans
Think about why people seek out whole-food ingredients in the first place: they want to know what they're putting in their body and where it came from.
With PurCaf®, your caffeine is sourced from green coffee beans — a recognizable, plant-based origin — instead of a synthetic process. For anyone who reads their labels and cares about provenance, that traceability is the whole point.
3) PurCaf® Is Highly Soluble in Water
PurCaf® is highly water-soluble.
That means it breaks down and goes to work quickly, giving you the effects of caffeine fast. With a supplement like Pre-Kaged®, we recommend you start sipping about 20–30 minutes before your workout.
Clean sources give you clean energy — and PurCaf® is made through a clean-water extraction process, using water rather than harsh solvents to pull the caffeine from the bean.
4) A Consistent Rush of Energy
One of the benefits of PurCaf® is that it's a patented form. A patented ingredient is made by the same company using the same standardized process every time — so you get a consistent, predictable product. With PurCaf®, you know exactly what you're getting, batch after batch.
Tap Into One of Nature's Most Remarkable Substances
You probably know somebody who can't start their day without caffeine (maybe it's you). It's a powerful compound with a host of benefits.
That's why we build effective, transparent doses of PurCaf® caffeine into all of our pre-workouts — every one except Pre-Kaged Non-Stim.
It's one more reason to choose a Kaged pre-workout over an energy drink.
FAQ
Can Natural Caffeine Still Give Me Jitters?
Yes. Jitters and an elevated heart rate are side effects of too much caffeine, regardless of the source. Natural and synthetic caffeine are the same molecule once they hit your system, so the dose — not the origin — is what determines how you feel.
If you're caffeine-sensitive or not used to taking it, start with a smaller amount. You can still experience a crash from any caffeine if you take too much, so it really comes down to the dose.
Is PurCaf® Natural Caffeine Different From the Caffeine in Coffee?
Chemically, it's the same active compound your morning coffee delivers. The difference is standardization: PurCaf® is extracted and purified to a precise, patented specification, so each serving contains a known, consistent amount of caffeine — something a cup of coffee can't promise.
What Is an Effective Starting Dose for Caffeine?
Our Caffeine capsules contain 100mg of caffeine per capsule. Pre-Kaged is a bit higher, at 274mg per scoop.
For context, a cup of coffee contains around 100–125mg of caffeine. To start with a more moderate dose, Pre-Kaged Sport has 188mg. The ideal starting dose depends on your sensitivity to caffeine.
