It is just used for flavor, but the part of it that is bio-engineered is the starch used to spray dry the actual flavor liquid so that the powder does not clump. This is the only product this flavor is used in. Good news, though! This product will be undergoing a reformulation to remove this ingredient, which should be completed in the coming months.
